The following excerpt is taken from the autobiography of General Henry‎(Hap)‎ Harley Arnold published by Global Mission.
Hap was born June 25, 1886 at Gladwyne, PA. He does not state hismother's maiden name. He does state that she was a member of the PA DARand that four ancestors on her side and three of his fathers side tookpart in the Revolutionary War. H e states that his paternal Grandfatherfought at Gettysburg. His father was Herbert Alonzo Arnold, a physicianat Gladwyne, PA and that he was one of a family of five children, namely,Elizabeth, Thomas, Henry, Clifford and Price. He entered West Point in1903 and after graduation was assigned to the newly formed Air Corps, hetook flight instruction from the Wright Brothers at Dayton, OH and heldpilots license #29.

Now for the undocumented part: William and Nancy left their home inMaryland about 1857, moving to Missouri, supposedly because of William'spoor health, and at the time of their moving they left a new born childwith the family of one of Will iam's older brothers, and that child wasHerbert Alonzo Arnold. ‎(the father of Hap - see above)‎ Heberth Alonzowas left with the family of one of Williams older brothers. It is alsosaid that Bessie Arnold Collins had worked for Hap as a domestic, andthat in more recent years he had visited her at her work as a librarianat W. VA. University in Morgantown W. VA. Bessie is the daughter ofSamuel Arnold, also a son of William and Nancy. Supposedly she had afamily bible that is supposed to s ubstantiate the above but so far noliving relative has seen this bible.
‎(Where this data breaks down is in the fact that the father andmother of William Arnold II is well documented and does not include anymention of Herbert Alonzo Arnold nor any mention of any of our Arnoldbranch having fought in the Revolution or the Civil War.)‎ I, for one, will not waste any time trying to prove a relationship to Hap.

William Arnold died Nov. 27, 1906 in Williams, W. VA. His body wastaken by train to a little rail station near the old farm and was carriedthrough deep snow to the Cemetery near the old farm, a distance of about2 miles.

A copy of the family bible was a source for the birth and deathdates of all of these children. It further shows that Mr. King was theminister that joined William and Nancy in wedlock on July 22, 1852.
On this page of the bible, the first child was crossed out. Youwill note that this child was included on the family group page and thebirth date for Elizabeth Catherine is identical with the marriage date.No further record is found for this child and the assumption is that anerror has occured here in copying dates and names. ‎[leyda.FTW]‎
